Black House

This project combined the personalities and core values of our client, the exceptional talent of Alex Ureña Design Studio and the timeless skillset of our Jason Miles Builder team. This client was a dynamic couple, one with an extensive knowledge of technology and eco-awareness and the other one a fashion designer that drew on her Japanese heritage to create a minimal, tranquil space for their gorgeous family of four. Purity in material, using natural surfaces such as off form concrete with all the characteristics and imperfections of a trowel blackened slab. Recycled traditional Australian hardwood windows, doors and feature joinery gives antiquity to the material from its previous life and the scars and markings that it bears. Australian hardwood “shou sugi ban” vertical cladding with double char gives a crazed burnt feature with minimal junctions between feature hardwood windows and doors - a traditional Japanese cladding.

Jason came across as gentle, passionate, artistic and detail-oriented. That first impression has held true through the build process and afterwards through our warranty period. We consider Jason a life-long friend. Jason, Louise and the rest of the team are always welcome for a cup of tea! Jason and his team all understood our desired outcome, were flexible when we made changes and also helped us make difficult decisions. Everything was always left neat and tidy and all work was performed with the
highest level of respect. Being on site was like witnessing the creation of an artwork, rather than a house.
